Q3 Business Insight: UK Dissolutions Outpace New Formations

The latest Q3 Business Insight from DataGardener shows a shift in the UK company landscape. Between July and September 2026, 194K+ companies were incorporated, down 4.7% on Q2, while dissolutions climbed 10.9% to 216K+. The register lost around 21.8K+ companies, and the formation-to-dissolution ratio fell below 1.0 for the first time in the series.

Pressure is also visible in credit data. This Q3 Business Insight records 44K+ new charges, up 16.8%, and 30K+ CCJs, up 9.3%, with ten of twelve regions seeing more judgments.

Regionally, formations fell in eleven of twelve regions. London still led with 66K+ new companies (34.3% of the total), but the North East was the only region to grow. Real estate, construction and hospitality led new incorporations.

Overall, the Q3 Business Insight points to a cautious market heading into Q4, with businesses watching cash flow and credit exposure closely. For lenders, investors and sales teams, it is an early-warning signal for where risk and opportunity are emerging. Figures are first-print and may be revised.
